Gun Hill Road

We try to stay true to our name in terms of the content we cover, but it's not everyday the mainstream media provides us with something profound to talk about. Today is different.

This friday marks the theatrical debut of Gun Hill Road, an independent film that won
over audiences and critics in the festival circuit and now finds itself in limited theatrical release across the country which is much more than other films of its caliber and audacity get to see. Named after a well-known street in Bronx, the film's location, Gun Hill Road tells the story of a father who returns home to find he has lost his hold on his family, more importantly his son who is now in the process of becoming his daughter. Centered on the struggle of this Latino family, the film has been lauded for tackling the topics of race and gender, and how they intersect in working-class urban America. Furthermore it stars Harmony Santana, an up and coming transgendered latina actress from New York City and was made by Rashaad Ernest Green, a Bronx native who based the tale on a family he knew. Colorlines posted a phenomenal interview and story on the film, which can be read here. Check out the trailer after the jump, and visit Gunhillroad.com for more information on the film and where you can see it.
