If you've gone to see a movie lately (like actually gone out to a theatre) then you may have seen a trailer for a film that looks awesome; as in full of total awe-inspiring beauty and magnitude. In the trailer you've seen Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, and colossal images and representations of life in its simplest and most complex forms. This film is called The Tree of Life, and it just won the Palme D'Or at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival today.
As an fyi, the Cannes Film Festival is the most prestigious and important annual film festival in the world, and the Palme D'Or is it's highest prize, awarded to the director of the best feature film in the competition. Although it should be noted that Tree of Life director Terrence Malick is no lucky novice. The acclaimed artist behind cinematic legends like Badlands and Thin Red Line, 67-year-old Malick has been known for taking long periods of time between films in order to carefully consider each piece of work, and it's been said he's been considering Tree of Life for thirty years. That's two decades longer than Christopher Nolan spent on his mind boggling Inception. More importantly, the film fought to get made as many were unsure of or put off by Malick's vision. Since production however, its synopsis and plot have been heavily guarded, and not much has been said about the film other than it traces a boys journey through childhood as he witnesses the loss of innocence to his arrival as a disillusioned grown man in a modern world who seeks and eventually realizes the beauty and love of all things in life. This much the trailer encapsulates, luring us with quotes such as "Unless you love your life will flash by," and "Someday we will fall down and weep, and we will understand it all, all things."
To see for yourself what those at Cannes saw in Malick's vision, the vision that originally scared others away, get to a theatre on May 27th and experience The Tree of Life. Enjoy the trailer after the jump.
The Tree of Life is coming out in limited release starting Friday May 27th. To find out when and where the film will be showing near you, visit its Fox Searchlight distribution page here.
