Vive la révolution (video)

Recently, France became the first country in the world to ban the wearing of the veil in public. The law, which bans any concealing of the face, means a boring Halloween and Carnivale for sure, but more importantly it marks a critical and grim turn of events in the European era of anti-immigrant and Islamophobic sentiment. As conflicts continue to devastate Middle-Eastern and North African countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Tunisia, and Libya, the influx of brown and Muslim immigrants and asylum-seekers into Europe shows no signs of slowing down and tensions continue to mount. However, despite all this negativity we can turn to the internet for hope. In lieu of the recent legislation, the French "Niqabitch" video has gone viral again and blogs have lit up with debate, indicating that the fight may not be over. In her brilliant Guardian article, Viv Groskop argues that the law may not even last. Educate yourself by reading her article here, and please enjoy the controversial (and fashionable, check out those heels) politics of Niqabitch.
